Earlier on in the year we met Stuart during one of the Learn My Way ICT sessions at Work on the Horizon, months later he has come on in leaps and bounds, his ICT skills have improved no end, he has his confidence back and he’s feeling positive about the future…

After 25 years of hard work as a foreman and warehouse manager, Stuart suffered a severe stroke and lost the use of his left side leaving him hospital bound for months whilst he made a slow recovery.

When he was finally discharged from the hospital Stuart was confined to his house and his partner had to become his full time carer. Suffering from memory loss, Stuart completely lost his confidence and struggled to go anywhere alone to meet new people.

It was a slow recovery but in February 2016 Stuart began coming to Work on the Horizon after his benefit was changed from ESF to JSA in order to start taking steps to return to work. With little confidence in his abilities and no computer skills, Stuart felt completely lost and desperately needed some support.

Stuart attended one-to-one job search sessions to help him look for work and he also enrolled onto the Learn My Way ICT course to gain the basic computer skills required to undertake job searches independently.

Stuart now attends the Learn My Way course every week and is doing really well. He has come on in leaps and bounds and has achieved four modules of the course and continues to work through the programme at his own pace. Beyond his computer skills the support he has received at WOTH has given Stuart his confidence back and he now attends the group on his own. Initially Stuart attended the course with his partner for reassurance but now, with the aid of his walking sticks, Stuart is able to make the journey on his own every week and feels it has given him a purpose.

His new IT skills mean that Stuart is able to conduct basic job searches independently which is helping him on his way back into work.

“I would like to say a few words of thanks to all the staff at WOTH for all their help and patience in getting me computer literate. I am very much enjoying the course and the help from Kerry and all the staff at WOTH. I would like to say a great big thank you to all of you!”
