At 61 years of age Stephen suffered a number of barriers to employment due to health issues and a lack of skills. As a result of this, Stephen lacked confidence and motivation and didn’t feel that he would ever be able to find work.

When Stephen was referred to the EOS Work Programme at Steps to Work he felt he faced too many barriers and needed a lot of one to one support from his Steps to Work coach in order to help him apply for the right jobs and gain the confidence to be able to apply for jobs that he would usually avoid due to a lack of confidence in his abilities. Stephen was also given support with his IT skills and he was referred to The Old Hall Partnership Centre in Walsall.

Stephen regularly attended job club at Steps to Work’s Darlaston Jet office where we helped him to amend is CV and cover letter to assist him in applying for jobs. This gave him the best possible chance of getting selected for interview and securing employment. As well as helping Stephen to apply for jobs, Steps to Work’s Employer Response Team put him forward for a number of vacancies however despite working hard to improve his chances and apply for as many jobs as possible Stephen was not successful in securing interviews.

Despite this knock back, Stephen was determined and with the help of his coach at Steps to Work he continued to apply for jobs until he was fortunate enough to secure an interview. To help ease his nerves Stephen’s advisor helped him to brush up on his interview techniques in preparation and Stephen aced the interview and was offered the job!

Stephen is now working as a cleaner based at Marks and Spencer’s in Walsall town centre and is thoroughly enjoying his job. His employer has been made aware of his health issues and offers ongoing support in his employment to ensure he is able to sustain his job. Stephen says is his much happier and more content since securing employment and is grateful that Steps to Work has helped to motivate him and get him a job he enjoys.

“I’m happy and relieved that I’ve managed to find a job. Being unemployed was de-motivating me and I’m happy to have been given support from Steps to Work. I’m much happier and more confident now that I’m working. Before coming to Steps to Work I’d almost given up hope!”
