“I feel so supported here and, thanks to my mock interview, I know how to improve my technique. I’m really enjoying my volunteering and I can now see how many valuable skills I have to offer the jobs market”

Ben joined the project as one of our first participants. He has not had a paid role for many years and he was worried about the way that employers viewed his CV with such a long gap with no obvious reason. He lacked confidence after being out of touch with the labour market for such a long time.

One of the first things that Citizens Advice South East Staffordshire did was to look at his CV and re-word it to show off the skills he had with people as well as computers and administration. They also set up a mock interview for him so he could have some real feedback from an employer that he had never met.

Ben said “I really enjoyed the mock interview. I was nervous but I was also looking forward to getting some honest feedback after attending what feels like hundreds of interviews with no success. I now know how to pitch myself a bit better at my next interview and how to best answer certain questions. I’ve grown in confidence and I’m being encouraged to diversify my volunteering roles so I can grow my skills”
