Stephen was made redundant in 2003. During this time, Stephen’s confidence and self esteem plummeted to an all time low. Being referred to Steps to Work by Jobcentre Plus, Steven’s advisor Susan Reynolds advised Stephen to attend the Intensive Activity Period Work Experiance (IAP WEX).
“I enjoyed attending the job search sessions, but I was very nervous about meeting new people and getting” said Stephen.
Stephen spotted a placement opportunity at The Salvation Army as a volunteer and asked Steps to Work Placement Officer, Nicky Matthews for more information Stephen was successful in gaining a placement after an informal chat with Captain Tim Stubbings.
Stephen started volunteering at the Walsall church recording audio cds for partially deaf and blind members. These include the Salvation Armies magazines, The ‘Salvationist’ and ‘War Cry’. The Magazines are distributed nationally to the Salvationists and to the public on a periodical basis.
“I have learnt new skills in media editing and recording I previously did a CLAIT course at Darlaston Online which has helped my knowledge of computing. ” said Stephen.
The experience gained from the Salvation Army has given Steven the confidence he needed to find work. Stephen has now found full time, paid employment as a warehouse operative but will still continue to volunteer at the church everyday.
