Ashley ‘Goes out’ of his way for new job

Posted on 21 May 2009.

Ashley, Wolverhampton
FTET Retail 26 weeks

Ashley said, “I was so happy when they offered me the job, all the hard work and effort has paid off after just 7 weeks on placement. I have been given the opportunity to prove to myself and to my employer that I can do a great job”

After completing a course in Game Design at College, Ashley started looking for full time work. Being unsuccessful in finding a suitable job, Ashley made contact with his local Jobcentre Plus for advice on what to do next. Ashley had no previous work history and had gained good grades in his GCSES and at college; Ashley knew that his lack of experience was holding him back.

After being referred to Steps to Work by Jobcentre Plus, Ashley was determined to find a work placement that would hopefully lead to a full time job. Simon Carter, Steps to Work Placement Officer, sought work experience placements suitable to Ashley’s skills and requirements. As a client on the FTET retail programme, Ashley wanted to find work in a retail environment. Simon found a placement straight away for Ashley at Go Outdoors in Wolverhampton.

“I couldn’t wait to start the placement I was really
excited about getting into work for the first time. I had applied for jobs and placements on my own but I wasn’t getting anywhere, then Simon found this placement for me and it really gave me confidence and hope that there was light at the end of the tunnel” explains Ashley.

7 weeks into Ashley’s placement a vacancy became available as a full time retail assistant and he was offered the job straight away. “I was so happy when they offered me the job, all the hard work and effort has paid off after just 7 weeks on placement. I have been given the opportunity to prove to myself and to my employer that I can do a great job” said Ashley
