European funding helps Wanna Be sports coaches achieve dreams

An innovative learning organisation for youngsters in Wolverhampton has been granted further funding to help it continue delivering its inspirational services.

Leicester-based LearnFit has secured European Social Fund (ESF) funding from Steps to Work to deliver a training course for post-16 year old NEETS (Not In Education, Employment or Training) who want to become sports coaches.

The Wanna Be a Sports Coach programme will be led by tutors Darren Lewis and Nicola Wright, and held at the Aldersley Leisure Village, Aldersley Road in Wolverhampton.

Jevon Payne, a director of LearnFit says: “Young people often need practical and vocational-based opportunities that will not only help them gain meaningful qualifications but also prepare them for the world of work, and that is what our programmes deliver.”

According to Government figures, the number of NEETs in Wolverhampton in 2009 was an estimated 890 (out of 8,067 16-18 year olds known to the local authority). In 2010, this figure was 550 (out of 8,012).

The Wanna be A Sports Coach programme for Post-16 learners has been designed to provide a flexible sports coaching programme for those who are passionate about sport or who are considering a career in sport.

Delivered between one and three days a week, the programme contains variations of BTEC in Work Skills, L2 Award in Community Sports Leadership, FA Referees Course, Personal & Social Development and assistance with employment and FE applications.
